OUR STORY

School Goal 1

2025 – Our inquiry question is as follows: Will implementation of the Math Minds program reduce knowledge gaps and improve student achievement in mathematical application especially in Grade One and Six?

New professional learning has included a deep dive into Math Minds K through 7 including both English and French tracks. This endeavor has been supported by District staff both on site and through DMEC (Delta Manor Educational Centre).

We are taking action through robust and authentic teacher collaboration during Coordinator of Inquiry sessions held weekly on Tuesday afternoons, our staff has committed to the delivery of the Math Minds program in their classrooms and through collaboration with one another.

School Goal 1 - Numeracy Update

June 2026

Progress Update, Current Results and Impact

Based on survey results, teachers would like more games/manipulatives to support the Math Minds program. This is being supported through collab time when students are in the library and experiencing hands on opportunities with the Math Festival manipulatives we have purchased from the Julia Robinson Math Festival.

As we shape our identity to a ‘math minded’ school, we have introduced the Math Festival manipulatives (Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival) to our collab time when students are in the library. This in addition to hosting our second annual Family Math Festival, is another opportunity to help strengthen students’ confidence by providing fun, creative and skill building activities.

Current data shows incremental improvements but measurable results around students’ relationship with math. Teachers report that students look forward to Math Mind lessons (these are complemented with other numeracy resources) and are more actively engaged with the visual aspect of the lessons. This, in combination with the our ADST program offered one day per week  with all the classes rotating through and the Seaquam STEMastery program offered at Sunshine Hills, has helped support our school numeracy goal. Moving forward, our school has committed to continuing with the Math Minds program into a third year to provide continuity and more measurable data with regard to improve student achievement.

This rigorous collaboration has continued on Tuesdays with three consecutive 50 minute blocks for teachers. We alternate bi-weekly with primary and intermediate teachers.  With this being the second year of Math Minds in both English and French, teachers are feeling comfortable with both content and pacing which supports their learners gain numeracy skills while building their confidence and problem solving skills.

School Goal 2 - ROARS Matrix Update

June 2026

Staff have created a draft revision of our ROARS matrix specifically removing acceptance and changing it to Attitude which students understand is about choice i.e. mindset. We continue to do a ROARS draw each week for those students who have exemplified/demonstrated RESPECT OWNERSHIP ATTITUDE RESPONSIBILITY SAFETY. We also incorporate these values into our monthly assemblies.
